Over 50,000 books are ready to go to new homes in Nelson, with the Founders Book Fair kicking off this weekend. Now in its 28th year, the nine-day long fair is the result of a year’s worth of donations of books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, games and puzzles. In the past few weeks, books have been coming in thick and fast, and up to 15 volunteers per day have been sorting and pricing everything. The books are sorted into more than 80 different categories, covering 150 tables, which are replenished daily by volunteers. Karen Clark, who is now in her sixth year as the book fair coordinator, says this year they have seen better quality books and more donations, and Nelson book-lovers are sure to be pleased with what they find. “The stuff you find in here is amazing,” she says.

If you’re a Nelson sports fan, chances are you’re feeling as content as Steven Adams’ bank manager right now. In the past week Nelson has secured another two years of international cricket, had its first Makos-developed All Black announced, seen our top footballer win big in South Africa, our top rally driver
win big at the national rally awards and the logo of our beloved Makos go back to what it should have been all along – a shark. That’s quite a lot of action in seven days. Here’s how it went down: Wednesday, May 25: Tasman Makos CEO Tony Lewis announces a back-flip of its logo redesign, keeping the new font but bringing back the shark which was a fan and player favourite.
Friday, May 27: New Zealand Cricket confirms Saxton Oval will host the Black Caps for four one day internationals over the next two summers. Saturday, May 28: Nelson rally driver Ben Hunt wins the Rally Founders Trophy at the NZ Motorsport Awards. Saturday, May 28: Former Richmond Athletic and Nelson Suburbs All White Jeremy Brockie scores in the final of the South Af-
rican cup final for his side SuperSport Utd, winning his first major club trophy. Sunday, May 29: Marist and Tasman Mako player Liam Squire is selected for the All Blacks, the first player to progress through local club rugby and Makos system into the world’s top rugby team. The only disappointment? That the Mike Pero Nelson Giants couldn’t win on Saturday night. I guess we can’t win them all.

“There are lovely things from the 1800s and on Friday, I found a classic Neil Perry cook book. I even found a random bank transfer to a Norwegian account in one book.” Karen says they have seen a “stunning” quantity of art books this year too, which has prompted volunteers to work with The Suter and Nelson School of Music, who will both be represented in the Windmill during the fair. The book fair is the major fundraising activity for Founders Heritage Park, and last year’s fair raised over $128,000 which was spent on development projects at the park including the redevelopment of the Newman’s coach display in the Livery Stables. Founders Annual Book Fair runs from Saturday 4 June to Sunday 12 June, 10am – 4.30pm. Daily pass $2, weekly pass $5, children under 12 free. The Book Fair will be based in the Energy Centre, with the children’s books located in the Granary Hall.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And if that doesn’t work, Nelson Hospital Quit Coach Sarah McKenzie says smokers need to try at least another six or seven times because that’s about how many attempts it takes some people to quit. It’s World Smokefree Day this Tuesday and Sarah says the staff at Nelson Hospital are doing their bit to try and encourage the 9288 smokers in Nelson and Tasman to kick the habit. Although smoking rates in the region have declined from 20.7 per cent in 2006 to 15.1 per cent in 2013, Sarah says there’s is still a long way to go before reaching the target of a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025.

The staff at Nelson Hospital also play a key role in delivering the smoke-free message, offering advice and support to more than 95 per cent of known smokers who are treated in the hospital.

The adults may have celebrated the Nelson Provincial Museum’s 175th birthday on Thursday night, but when Saturday rolled around it was the kids’ turn. The museum was filled with painted faces and chubby toddler fingers grasping balloon animals tightly at the museum’s Family Fun Day. The kids had the run of the museum with face painting, a clown, balloons and art competitions that are being displayed proudly in the museum windows. The museum’s chief executive, Lucinda Blackley-Jimson, says it was a fun day and the staff and kids all got into it. “It was lovely seeing kids running around the streets of Nelson afterwards with their balloons and smiling, painted faces,” she says. “Our front of house staff really got into it and there’s been a real buzz with all the celebrations. “We had so many children, parents and caregivers come and have fun and really enjoy

The idea for the museum was conceived by one of the early Pakeha settlers from England who started collecting items for the museum and library and grew it into the collections we know today. For the slightly more mature celebrations on Thursday night, the museum was open late for a talk on Nelson’s Underbelly, speeches on the museum’s history, a birthday cake was cut and there was a performance from Nelson’s Mosaic choir.

Project Butterfly is amongst many projects gearing up for this year’s Light Nelson, with a collective installation titled ‘Bring to Light’. The local charity is keen to be taking part in the event for the very first time, with the idea for their entry coming from local artist and NMIT student, Yael Deer. “We really strive to give families a chance to express their grief and feel acknowledged, whilst giving them opportunities to meet others in similar situations,” says charity founder Rebekah Malthus. “We want the opportunities to be fun, creative and natural. For us, Light Nelson was the perfect venue. Not only do children and families get to meet each other, but they get to see their creations and their love for their relative illuminated and admired by others.” Yael, who is also involved in creating the memorial pathway for Project Butterfly, is leading the creation of Bring to Light, while local families and even those overseas are involved in folding butterflies which will then be

While some are making them at home, Project Butterfly is also holding workshops at NMIT where families can come to contribute and be around those who have also experienced the loss of a loved one. Project Butterfly welcomes those who have lost a loved one, not necessarily a child loss, to contribute to the installation, whether they would like to come along to a workshop or send in their folded butterflies. Nelson city develops online shop Locally Owned and Operated

Uniquely Nelson are making it easier for locals to connect with their favourite businesses in the city centre, in an initiative that is the first of its kind in New Zealand. LoveNelson.NZ is a New Zealandmade social commerce channel which allows businesses to transact with their customers inside the Uniquely Nelson Facebook page. Nelson city businesses can sell their products, services or tickets to their customers, and Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says it’s the easiest, most cost-effective way for any business to make a start on e-commerce. “It’s about locals supporting locals,” says Simon. “It’s a way to help Nelsonians buy from their favourite Nelson city businesses in more ways than one. It doesn’t replace the physical store or venue, but allows buying to happen from anywhere, with the customer still able to come
to the city to get the service they need or to pick up their purchases.” He adds that he opportunity for the city doesn’t stop at Facebook users, because people don’t have to be on Facebook themselves to buy on LoveNelson.NZ. “Anyone can logon and use LoveNelson.NZ, so our city now has the chance to convert into customers the 81 per cent of shoppers who conduct online research before buying,” he says. Uniquely Nelson tested the concept with a number of local businesses before moving ahead with the development, and in just two months they have more than 20 businesses, and between them they are selling well over 100 products. “With these businesses, and the many more coming on board soon, now is the chance for Nelsonians to log on and buy what they need,” he says. Another case of measles: A third, unrelated, case of measles has been confirmed for Nelson, indicating that it is now reached deeper into the community. The Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service says the latest person with measles has been admitted to Nelson Hospital. Medical Officer of Health Dr Andrew Lindsay says that the new case appears to be unrelated to the first two, and this indicates that measles is likely to be in the community. The home building industry around Nelson and Tasman is "pumping", with many building companies taking on extra staff to keep up with demand and prospective buyers willing to wait more than 12 months before they can move into their new homes. "There're not enough hours in the day, or days in week, to keep up," Milestone Homes Nelson Bays regional manager Adam Hills says. "What we are seeing is related immigration and a flow out of the some of the larger centres where it is less affordable to build a house." "We have 30 homes under construction and are on track to build about 62 homes this year. But that's well within the capacity of the company because we have very good contractors and suppliers." Simon says the buoyant new home market is good news for the region, employing hundreds of tradespeople and suppliers. "I went out to our Langdale Grove subdivision the other day and there were tradies' vehicles double-parked everywhere. I'd hate to think how many people are working on new homes around the region."

Kindergarten seeking tales of its past

One of Nelson’s oldest kindergartens is on the move – but they need help from the local community to bring its history to their new location. Rutherford St Kindergarten has been at its current site since 1962, but due the expansion of the nearby Unite church, the kindergarten won’t be renewing their lease and are on the hunt for a new site. As part of the move they are seeking stories of its past, and with a history dating back to 1855, with Miss Hooper’s School in Nile St, both staff and the parent-led board are hoping for some interesting tales to emerge. The community-based kindergarten has moved a number of times over its long history - to Bishop’s School, then to the Cathedral’s Sunday school rooms, and finally to its current location on Rutherford St. “We would love to receive information, photos or stories from families who have either attended, or have been a part of the running of the kindergarten, and bring that history with us to the new lo-

We want to keep the values and what people like about the kindergarten.” With their lease ending in July 2018, the search is now on for a new site, and Penny says that there are two or three potential options being considered.
“We really want to stay in the same area and we surveyed parents who said they like the proximity to schools and town,” she says. Manager and senior teacher Mary Davies, who has been there for 10 years, says people may be seeing the changes with the church, and might be wondering what’s happening with the kindergarten. “We want to assure people that our kindergarten won’t be closing,” she says. “Our focus is to continue the

(Fun)draising voyages around D'Urville to raise $40,000 Simon Bloomberg
Four charities will benefit from a "unbelievably generous gesture" by Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles and their staff who are donating their boat and time to take 400 people on a fundraising voyage around D'Urville Island. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles' managing director Keith Knapp approached the Rotary Club of Motueka about the fundraising project last month, offering his company's flagship vessel Crusader and its crew for four days of sailing. Crusader will take 100 passengers on each of four voyages from Nelson around D'Urvillle Island, potentially raising $40,000 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. "The boat is just sitting there in the winter and very few people have been around D'Urville, so a charity cruise around the island seemed like a good idea," Keith says. "All our staff will be volunteering their time and Sir Peter (Talley) is donating the fuel, so everything will be going to charity." Rotary's Peter Fry says "it's an unbelievably generous gesture" and they jumped at the chance to help organise the voyages. He says Rotary will be paying for all the advertising and promotion as well as helping out on the four voyages. Peter says he wasn't surprised by Keith's offer "because that's just the way he is". Although Keith is not a Rotary member, Rotary made him a Paul Harris Fellow for his contribution to tourism and the community in 2013. Crusader is designed and built for the local sea conditions and operates in the Abel Tasman National Park throughout the summer months. It has great viewing areas, a small café and bar that serves coffee, tea, cold drinks and light snacks. The voyages cost $100 per person and will be held on Saturday June 25, Sunday June 26, Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3.
Cruises will depart from Port Nelson at 9am and will return sometime around 4pm, and will stop for an hour at the D’Urville Island Wilderness Resort located in Catherine Cove. The resort's cafe is providing seafood chowder, rolls, tea and coffee for $18 per person and this needs to be reserved at the time of booking. Passengers can take their own picnics as well. Donation helps to fuel foodbank volunteers

Volunteers at a Nelson foodbank are now fuelled up for the rest of the year, thanks to a donation from the Nelson Bays Community Foundation (NBCF). The Nelson Community Foodbank Trust has received a $6000 grant from the foundation, to assist with the cost of supplying fuel vouchers to volunteers. The NBCF formed a partnership with the Tindall Foundation last year, aimed at supporting the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island. They announced their first funding round late last month of four donations, totalling $28,000. The foodbank provides support and assistance to families and individuals experiencing short term financial hardship, and works in collaboration with social service agencies such as The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and Nelson Budget Service. Nearly 30 volunteers race around town delivering food parcels five days a week to approved applicants, using their own vehicles and time. Food bank coordinator Mike Gibson says the vouchers will be hugely appreciated, with volunteers clocking up around 15,000km in mileage every year around Nelson and Stoke. “Our volunteers should get some reimbursement for mileage, as some do clock up a bit,” says Mike. “It’s definitely needed.” Mike says that the demand for food parcels goes up and down, and in the last 12 months they have delivered 1500 parcels. 40 hours a week of voluntary work goes into the operation, which Mike says equates to $600 worth of voluntary work every week on minimum wage. And it’s not just a Nelson affair. He says they receive fruit from Ruby Bay and donations from the Hope Community Church. “We get very well supported,” says Mike. Chair of the Nelson Bays Community Foundation, Julie Varney, says they wanted to recognise the valuable contribution that the foodbank makes in the community. “The service is heavily reliant on volunteers who deliver the food parcels. This funding grant will provide petrol vouchers to the volunteers who use their own vehicles and help ensure the ongoing viability of the service,” she says. The next round under the funding partnership closes 16 August 2016 and details of the application criteria can be found on tindall.org.nz and nbcf.org.nz.

Free game in the next Live Nelson Keep an eye out for a special edition of Live Nelson. Our next issue will include a free children’s board game pull out. The Maitai / Mahitahi River game will help to spread the message to school children that migratory fish need a healthy river and clear passage upstream to maintain their spawning patterns. The river is home to a range of native fish including inanga, smelt, yellow eyed mullet, longfin eels, koura, torrent fish, ko-aro and giant, common and redfin bullies.

This month’s bouquet recipients are Brian and Beverley Rodley, for their invaluable volunteer work throughout the Nelson community, including over 30 years at the Lifelinc Goodwill Store. Brian and Beverley began volunteering behind the counter at the Store, which sells second hand goods to raise funds for Nelson’s free counselling service, Lifelinc Nelson. Their work has ensured the Store continues to provide a valuable service to the community, where essential items can be purchased at low prices. Brian and Beverley’s passion for the Nelson community has also seen them active in the St John’s Methodist Church, volunteering in a variety of roles, including pastoral care and looking after the foodbank. On top of this, they have ensured Nelson Intermediate School continues to bloom, pruning the roses at the school for over 30 years. It is an absolute delight to be able to recognise Brian and Beverley’s impressive work within our community. Founders Book Fair on this weekend This weekend, the doors open at one of Nelson’s favourite events, the Founders Annual Book Fair. Every day throughout the year, Nelsonians drop donated books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, games and puzzles into the apple crate in Founders Windmill. “Their generosity fills at least one or two apple crates every day, and this has risen to six or seven apple crates every day in the lead up to the Fair,” says Council Heritage Facilities Manager, Maria Anderson. “This means that book lovers will have a huge selection of quality books to choose from at the Book Fair – which is one of the largest Book Fairs in New Zealand. There’s also a large
number of quality art and music books this year,” she says. A core team of 15 volunteers spend two mornings a week sorting and pricing books while a further 60 volunteers join the team to unpack, sell and replenish the 150 tables with 50,000 books during the Fair itself. This year, the donations have been sorted into more than 80 different categories. Mayor Rachel Reese says the Book Fair is a great opportunity to stock up on your reading collection. “The amount of work that goes into the Fair is phenomenal. The large
number of invaluable volunteers, working throughout the year to make this event possible, do a truly outstanding job,” she says. The Book Fair is a major fundraising activity for Founders Heritage Park and last year’s Fair raised over $128,000, which was spent on development projects at the park including the redevelopment of the Newman’s coach display in the Livery Stables. Founders Annual Book Fair runs from Saturday 4 June to Sunday 12 June, 10am – 4.30pm. Daily pass $2, weekly pass $5, children under 12 free.

Fruit tree pruning
Dog registrations
Head along to the Waimarama Community Gardens on 12 June from 10am – 12pm to learn how to prune your fruit trees.
Dog registration forms are now being sent for the 2016/17 registration year. Registration is due by 30 June.
There will be fruit tree pruning demonstrations with participation alongside experienced tutors who are members of Nelson Tree Crops Association. The free event will finish with a pot luck shared lunch. Bring your own secateurs and a small plate to share.
You can register your dog by bringing in your registration form to the Customer Service Centre, or you can complete the form and make payment on Council's website, using your dog owner number as reference. Dog registration fees remain the same as last year and there is a fee schedule on the Council website. If you have moved address without notifying Council then you may not receive your registration form and will need to come in to Customer Services Centre. If you have rehomed your dog and received a registration form, you need to complete the back of the form providing details of the new owner before signing and returning to Council. It is a requirement of the Dog Control Act 1996 that all dogs are registered at three months of age. It is an offence to keep a dog older than three months which is unregistered and a court may impose a fine of up to $3,000.

Second Hand Sunday returns Sunday 12 June 2016, 10am Freely given and freely taken away, Second Hand Sunday is back again and is like a garage sale but with no money involved. People taking part simply leave unwanted items on their driveway for others to take away for free. However, households are asked not to put out food, faulty electrical goods, chemicals or firearms. If you’re wanting to offer second hand goods, just register before 9am on Thursday 9 June. We will then publish the list of households taking part on our website. nelson.govt.nz
St Vincent Street Cycleway extension As approved by Council, the next stage of the St Vincent Street Cycleway is due to get underway. This will extend the cycle lanes from Gloucester Street to Haven Road. For this section the existing footpath will serve as a shared path. The path will be widened in front of Countdown and The Warehouse. There will be changes to the landscaping to make the path as wide as it needs to be in this busy location. As part of this work, the large electricity transformer near The Warehouse will also be relocated to provide extra space. The footpath will need to be closed in places while the work is carried out and entrance to the carpark maybe also affected at times so please look out for any signs in place, follow the instructions of staff on site and take care. Thanks for your patience and understanding while we work to get this project done.
Nelson Marina Strategy Council is in the process of preparing a strategy for the future of the Nelson Marina and is encouraging further community feedback. A public meeting will be held at the Trafalgar Park Pavilion on Wednesday 15 June at 7.30pm. This will be an opportunity to discuss the draft ‘Nelson Marina Strategy’ which has been developed in consultation with the community. More information on the draft strategy is available on the Council website and a hard copy is held at the Council’s Customer Service Centre.
Woodburner Plan Change The Woodburner Plan Change hearing closed on 26 May, and the committee should release its decision by the end of June. Following that there is an appeal period to the Environment Court of another 30 working days. This means that people hoping to install new approved woodburners in the areas covered by the plan change must wait until the appeal period has closed – in late August – before the outcome of the Plan Change is known. nelson.govt.nz

Burning wood efficiently will not only save you money (to produce heat not smoke) but also help keep the air clear for your family, friends and neighbours. To help make sure you are saving money and keeping our air clear, simply check how long the chimney smokes when you light your fire and when you refuel. Some smoke is inevitable, but if occurs for more than 10 minutes when you start your fire, or for more than 5 minutes when you refuel, then you may need to check how dry your wood is, or clean your chimney. The firm started off as Pickles Perkins & Hadlee (PHH) in 1961. Barry Thompson arrived in Nelson in 1961 to manage the accountancy practice of PPH chartered accountants of Christchurch. With the growth in the practice some five years later Denis Daly, also from the Christchurch office, came to the Nelson office. In 1968, when a lot of accountancy practices throughout New Zealand were merging and starting practices in the main centres, Barry and Denis decided that they would prefer to retain a local Nelson identity and purchased the Nelson branch of PPH. The new firm of Thompson Daly & Co was set up and continued to grow to the current position of having nine qualified chartered accountants. In 2011, a separate branch was opened in Richmond under the management of Wayne Anderson to better service our Tasman clients and continue to grow the practice. Wayne joined the firm 15 years ago on his return to Nelson and together with three Nelson office staff shifted to the Richmond premises. Robbie Reynolds (Rural Specialist) joined Wayne in March 2014.

When Joseph and Pirihira Paul founded Kia Ngawari in 1974 they wanted to pass on to the next generations the importance of kapa haka. On Saturday that wish came true, as the three generations of Kia Ngawari took to the stage and won the Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South) Senior Kapa haka competition. Pirihira’s daughter Louisa Paul says the performance went really well. “We were all a bit nervous, but excited. It was good to put

what we had practiced up onto the stage and now we’ll get to represent Nelson at Te Matatini national kapa haka festival.” Kia Ngawari’s performance was as much about looking into the past as it was about looking to the future, with several original members performing waiata before passing the mantle onto the younger generations.
“When my husband and I formed the group originally we were the duet, but today we sang with the young ones coming through and then we disappeared and let them complete it, that was a form of handing over their right to take the stage, it’s in good hands,” says Pirihira. Pirihira says kapa haka has changed vastly since she first performed it. “It’s more exciting and it’s grown, it’s exploded onto the world which is great.”

Nelson reins over Harlequins despite downpour Andrew Board Nelson slipped and slid its way into the semifinals of the Tasman Trophy on Saturday, with a 24-5 victory over Harlequins in sodden conditions at Trafalgar Park. Galbraith Group Nelson’s bonus point win means it will “visit” second-placed Wakatu Hotel Marist at Trafalgar Park on Wednesday -- the kicker being, of course, that Trafalgar Park is Nelson’s home ground, too. In the other semi-final, runaway leaders Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers will host Moutere, Marlborough’s sole representative, at Brightwater, also on Wednesday night. Moutere leap-frogged both Freeman Roofing Stoke and Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys into fourth place with its one point win over Stoke, while Waimea also suffered a heart-breaking one point loss to miss the playoffs. While Wanderers will go into its game as heavy favourites, it will be the NelsonMarist clash that is likely to produce the more enthralling contest. Nelson schools make a splash at champs Simon Bloomberg Nelson College's Ben Allan helped his school win the junior team's competition at the Tasman Secondary Schools cross-country champs at Rabbit Island last Wednesday, prevailing in a desperate finish to win by just one second. Ben led all the way around a waterlogged Rabbit Island course before holding off a late challenge from Motueka High's Fletcher Pitchworth to win in 14 minutes 26 seconds. Nelson College's Jordan Newsome finished third in 14min 40sec with team-mate Ben Baker sixth in 14min 54sec to secure the team's compe-
tition. Earlier, Hunta Sutherland led a Nelson College for Girls clean-sweep in the junior girls' race, winning in 12min 43sec. Hannah Mackay-Wright finished second, Charlotte Tucker third and Breene Gibbons fourth to complete the school's dominance in the team's competition. Nelson College for Girls also won the year 9 team's competition with Eloise Beattie winning in 12min 12sec and Zinnia Price finishing third in 13min 16sec. Nelson Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exponent Mikey Bloomfield won a gold medal at the Auckland Championships by winning his four fights by tap out, including a rear naked choke and a shoulder submission called the Kimura lock The 23-year-old has tried almost every martial arts discipline, but the middleweight settled on BJJ because of the many ways he could beat an opponent. “I was hoping I could win gold, but I wanted to test

"All the guys I fought were really nice and now we are friends on Facebook, which is cool." could pick up any hints about their style. The sport is a martial art based around self-defence and Mikey is keen to keep going through the grades. Mikey trains with about 25 others at Club Italia on Trafalgar St, which is now the new home of Nelson’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene. Mikey says the training is about skill rather than attempting to hurt or injure an opponent, and the exposure the martial art is getting through the Ultimate Fighting Championship is a bonus for the club. “BJJ is truly international and is just starting to get popular with people.”

the season we played the game the right way, we’ll walk out with our heads held high. The character of the players is superb, I will miss going to training with these guys. “And the fans this year have been fantastic, one of our advantages is our home court. Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of that, but I think one of the reasons we start so good is the energy in the building, the players feel it.” After the game on Saturday, Tim and his players went and shook the hands of every person on a sponsors’ table. He says they understand that without the fans and sponsors, there is no team.

Tim says the highlights of the season for him include a return to playing at the Trafalgar Centre, the win over Southland in Invercargill, which he says was their most complete performance, the first home game which the Giants won, and the last-second win over Taranaki in New Plymouth. While 2016 didn’t end how he wanted, Tim says he’ll be back next year. “Unfortunately, you can’t win a championship every season but I’ll be doing my best to make sure we can bring one to Nelson next season.”

Finn Delany’s strong form for the Giants has seen him named in the Tall Blacks squad to play in the Olympic Qualifiers.
“We came out very focused and playing fantastic basketball and then we hit a tough patch in the middle,” he says. “As much as it hurts, the game on Saturday was a representation of the whole season for us. Our ability to play championship basketball but an inability to sustain it for the whole game.” For the record, at the end of the first quarter the Giants were up 26-14, after earlier being up 24-9. At half time the sides were tied but then the Saints went marching on, leading 72-64 at three quarter time and eventually winning the game 96-83. “It was really frustrating; it was really similar to the game last week,” says Tim. “It’s frustrating, but it’s sports.” Captain Sam Dempster says it wasn’t the way the team wanted to finish the season. “It was tough, it’s always tough to lose a game like that. We had a good first half, we got into it, we knew they’d come back and it hurts, but we gave it everything we’ve got.” He says the Giants let some opportunities throughout the season slip, but it wasn’t through a lack of effort. While Tim was disappointed that they had exited the competition, he says every other aspect of the team has been a pleasure. “Throughout

Dayna plays netball’s numbers game Jacob Page
Junior netball numbers in Nelson are on the rise under the watch of Dayna Whiting. Netball Nelson's development officer has been in the role for just over a year and in that time junior teams have increased from 82 to 104. Dayna has also completed her Netball New Zealand coaching accreditation which will mean she can run more courses in the coming weeks. Dayna says the work NNZ is putting in to give coaches and players the tools to enjoy the game are behind the rise. "A lot of the material that we are being given for us to teach the kids is really great and that gets kids excited about netball," she says. Mainland Tactix coach devel-

opment manager Jen Hooper, who oversaw Dayna's coaching qualification, says Nelson is fortunate to have Dayna implementing Netball New Zealand's junior strategy. "Dayna is really passionate and committed to netball in Nelson and Nelson Netball is fortunate to have someone of her quality, who grew up in the area, doing the role." Dayna's role is a part-time one at 25 hours a week but she says she enjoys going into schools and giving students a taste of netball. "If kids can get the chance to play the game then they'll get excited to do it over a season," she says. Dayna plays premier club netball for Prices Pharmacy on a Thursday night and is a Nelson representative.

Competitors must have a torch and wear high-visibility clothing. MULTISPORT: Nelson multisport athlete Cameron Jones won the Mt Isobel Challenge in Hanmer Springs on Saturday. Cameron completed the 8km mountain run and 22km mountainbike in 1 hour 37 minutes 46 seconds, holding off second-placed Steve Halligan by two minutes and one second.
